Friendship Story

Natalie and Abigail’s Friendship Story

Abigail Winslow loved to talk and was very popular and known throughout Riverview South Middle School. Abigail’s favorite subjects in school were art and science. During the long school day she looked forward to cheerleading practice.
Natalie Heralin was usually quiet and not very popular at school she was sometimes referred to as “the Girl was Friends with Leigh”. Natalie’s favorite subjects in school were history and reading. During the school day, she looked forward to swim team meets. She used to look forward to after school when she and Leigh would walk home together.
Leigh had been Natalie’s old best friend. Leigh had always been pretty and popular. When Natalie, Abigail and Leigh used to go to Southeastern Elementary, Leigh had been popular. Because of Leigh, Natalie was popular. She knew that it wasn’t because of Leigh’s popularity that they were friends, it was because of her friendship. Leigh moved to Ohio at the end of fifth grade because her parents were photographers and wanted to take pictures and her Aunt Tina lived there. The girls are in sixth grade now.
Abigail lived three houses down from Natalie’s. At the beginning of the summer, Natalie had been very lonely. Then her sister, Valerie had told her, “Stop being so lazy! There are other things to do than mope Lazybones!”
“Like what?,” Natalie retorted.
“Well,” Valerie said, trying to think of something. “There’s Abby Winslow. Her sister Alison is going to go to North High School with me this year.”
Natalie thought about going and asking if Abigail would want to go to the local swimming pool. Then she remembered that Abigail was friends with Katie. Katie had always said Natalie was never meant to be popular and Leigh was supposed to be her friend. Natalie knew it wasn’t her fault that Leigh wasn’t Katie’s friend anymore. Leigh wasn’t Katie’s friend anymore, because in 3rd grade, she would tease and be mean to Natalie.
Abigail had befriended Katie after Katie told Abigail a story about Leigh and Natalie that was full of lies. That’s how the girls had become enemies.
Natalie decided she would ask Abigail. She went down the street past her neighbor’s houses and knocked on Abigail’s door. Abigail answered. Abigail had long blond hair and amber brown eyes.
“Do you want to go the pool with me?,” Natalie asked.
“Which one? There’s a lot in the city,” Abigail pointed out.
“The one down the street, you know, Jackson Street Community Pool,” Natalie told her.
“Sure, I haven’t been to a pool all summer!,” Abigail said., “By the way call me Abby.”
“And you can call me Talie,” Talie said. The girls agreed to meet in between there houses, which was in front of Mrs. Jones bright blue Victorian house in fifteen minutes .
Two hours later, the girls were exhausted from swimming and decided to take a break. They went to the Snack Shack next to the pool and ordered nachos, cherry and coke slushies and a hotdog for Abby and a chilidog for Talie.
They went to the poolside where the had saved beach chairs with their things. While they were eating, Natalie decided to ask Abigail about Katie, “ Are you and Katie still friends?”
“Kat? Not any more. She got mad that I wouldn’t change my nickname to Kit so we would be Kit and Kat , like, the candy bar. And she said we couldn’t be friends any more after she found out you lived down the street,” Abby explained.
“I guess she gets mad easily,” Talie commented. After that day, neither of the girls got bored over the summer. They would go swimming, go on bike rides on the city’s trails, play games and have fun sleep-overs.
By the time school had started in mid-August, the two had become good friends. When Natalie looked at the page that listed who was in her homeroom. She scrolled down the list and found Katie Sheraton. “Oh no!,” she thought. Then as her eyes looked down, Natalie saw Abigail Winslow. “Well at least I have Abby,” she thought.
In class, Katie was appalled to find out that Abigail and Natalie had become best friends, “Abby! Abigail Marina Winslow! Didn’t you get my email?! We can be friends again. I don’t care what your nickname is, whether it’s Kit or Abby. I don’t care who lives on your street whoever it is, Natalie Heralin or Alexis Finster!” A new girl, Alexis felt very insulted and did not know why Natalie did not feel the same way.
Their homeroom and English teacher, Mr. Mackerson was very disappointed in his class. “ Class!,“ Mr. Mackerson tried to be heard over all the commotion. He flipped the light switch on and off, until He was noticed. Finally when the room was quiet, “I need you to the volume down and use inside voices. And Katie, since your going to be so mean, I need you to come with me,” Mr. Mackerson yelled.
Katie screamed so loud that the whole room could hear. It was so loud that Mrs. Carrington, the principal came up from downstairs and asked what happened. The class clown, Eli Herbert started calling Katie “Bad Kiddy Kat“.
Mrs. Carrington had always been a pretty strict principal and gave Katie two weeks of detention. “I wonder what will become of Bad Kiddy Kat?,” Eli asked jokingly. That got him three days of detention.
As Abigail and Natalie were walking home, they decided it had been a big first day. Now Abigail and Natalie could be friends without anyone teasing them.

This is a story I wrote for a contest, but sadly it did not win.
It should have!
You wouldn’t think that two girls who were so different could become best friends, but Abigail and Natalie did. Natalie and Abigail were very different girls.
